What does gender dysphoria feel like? ›

Gender dysphoria is a term that describes a sense of unease that a person may have because of a mismatch between their biological sex and their gender identity. This sense of unease or dissatisfaction may be so intense it can lead to depression and anxiety and have a harmful impact on daily life.

For individuals transitioning from female to male (transgender men), medical treatment includes hormonal therapy with testosterone. Gender-affirming surgery includes "chest" surgery, such as mastectomy, and "genital" or "bottom" surgery, such as hysterectomy, oophorectomy, vaginectomy, metoidioplasty, and phalloplasty.

Gender Dysphoria and Complex Trauma

Maltreatment experiences may include: severe neglect; exposure to domestic violence; intensive, painful medical conditions; and physical and sexual abuse (Zilberstein, 2014).

Gender dysphoria might start in childhood and continue into adolescence and adulthood. Or you might have periods in which you no longer experience gender dysphoria. You might also experience gender dysphoria around the time of puberty or much later in life.

Take your time, transitioning can take a long time. On average it takes 2-3 years. Talk to people in your trans support group if you want help with your appearance. For example your clothes and hair.

Your body will begin to redistribute your weight. Fat will diminish somewhat around your hips and thighs. Your arms and legs will develop more muscle definition, with more prominent veins and a slightly rougher appearance, as the fat just beneath the skin becomes a bit thinner.

The results are male-like genitalia, voiding in standing position and preserved sexual arousal, but without possibility for penetrative intercourse. Additional advantages are full erogenous sensation, the ability of erection and minimal scarring of the donor-site in a single stage procedure.

Gender dysphoria history: Of 155 TW patients, 112 (72%) reported feeling GD for the first time by age 7 (Table 2). Eighty-one percent reported that feelings of GD were among their earliest childhood memories. Patients reported that their earliest episodic memories occurred at a mean age of 4.53 years.

Causes of gender dysphoria

Occasionally, the hormones that trigger the development of biological sex may not work properly on the brain, reproductive organs and genitals, causing differences between them. This may be caused by: additional hormones in the mother's system – possibly as a result of taking medication.

They see themselves, or a certain aspect of themselves, as “distorted” or “ugly.” Though gender dysphoria and body dysmorphia are two different things, it's very possible to experience both disorders, sometimes at the same time. For example, someone who has gender dysphoria may also become preoccupied with breast size.
