Sony cancels The Interview release amid threats
Breaking news
Sony Pictures has cancelled the planned release on 25 December of the film The Interview, after major cinema chains decided not to screen it.

The film is about a fictional plot to kill North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.

Hackers have already carried out a cyber attack on Sony and warned the public to stay away from cinemas screening the film.

Earlier, the New York premiere of The Interview was cancelled. Sony says it understands its partners' decision.

However, in a statement it said it was "deeply saddened at this brazen effort to suppress the distribution of a movie".

"In light of the decision by the majority of our exhibitors not to show the film The Interview, we have decided not to move forward with the planned December 25 theatrical release," it said.

"We respect and understand our partners' decision and, of course, completely share their paramount interest in the safety of employees and theatre-goers."

It added: "We stand by our film makers and their right to free expression and are extremely disappointed by this outcome."

North Korea just punched America in the balls. Way to go, Sony!

Regardless of the merits of the film and what some people think of Seth Rogen, this will set a horrible precedent.

Chalk one up for the terrorists.

At the risk of posting an exceedingly unpopular view:
I would say that when a film-maker's right to free expression (especially for a film that is, by most accounts, juvenile and trivial) puts the lives of innocent people in ANY risk of possible harm, then those "rights" need to take a back seat.

Further, no one is restricting the filmmakers' rights to expression. They have made their movie, it will be out there, if not in theaters then online and on video. A number of chains independently decided not to screen it before Sony cancelled the release, and as private entities that was their right -- they were absolutely not wrong not to endanger the lives of their employees and customers (including customers not watching this movie) for a game of chicken with potentially dangerous assholes. Who knows what Sony's motives are anymore, but this isn't a matter of principle. Sony isn't the US. This is a matter of not risking people's lives unnecessarily.

Yep, fear of terrorism wins again. It just validates the method and will continue to get worse. The ironic thing is "we" are doing to ourselves because you have a better chance of getting hit by lightning than dieing by the hands of a terrorist.

OK, take it higher, what if Japan objects to "Unbroken" and its depiction of its soldiers mistreating WWII POWs, and threatens all nastiness if film is exhibited. Grow a pair, Sony! Wussies.

I've got mixed feelings about this ... mainly that it's unfortunate for the film industry to be bullied. However, it is not lost on me that comedies generally are not written regarding the elimination of a country's leader. It's kinda like it seems to be okay territory because it's about North Korea, but would potentially be considered less humorous were it about a western leader.

Ironically, Team America pretty much conquered this material in spades years ago ... via puppets. FSM Board: THE INTERVIEW - Sony Cancels Release (76)

LLLR's was going to release the score. I hope they are still doing it. and I hope there's a nice big final liner notes page message that reads:

FUCK YOU, KIM JUNG UN-DEAD.

That despotic inbred and whoever had a part in this over there, are all bluster. They've been caught lying about their abilities, at least twice Photoshopping images to make it seem like they have mroe might, I think one time they even used an image from a film of a fighter jet to show they have a powerful fighter jet, and they had to threaten the lives of their citizens to appear to mourn painfully over Kim Jung-Dead's death (that was widly under reported in the propaganda cable news networks).

They were going to do nothing. They're all talk and Photoshop.

Was Un-Dead going to have people killed in theaters? No.

Was he going to sit naked alone in his mansion while eating cans of frosting and tubs of Häagen-Dazs while morning the fact he was born without a penis and that no one will take him seriously? Yes.

Right now, if Sony has any balls, they'd get in on the action:

How is this viewed as un-American or having to do ANYTHING to do with FREE SPEECH?!

Sony is a JAPANESE owned company. They made a film to MAKE A PROFIT.

If the US owned theater chains decided to NOT SHOW the film [they blinked first!], exactly what the hell does anyone expect the studio to do? Anyone who thinks this BUSINESS move has anything to do with American politics is an idiot.

But OK, let us use our brains and say the movie was released and attacks did happen....would everyone rally behind the movie theatre chains and Sony and say "AMERICAN #1!"

Did we all forget the Comedy Central/South Park controversy with Mohammed and the altering of episodes?

Do Americans know that US movie studios decide NOT to show movies in other countries because of the religious views of said countries? Sex in the City 1 and 2 were not released in countries with a LARGE Muslim population nor are religious themed movies like NOAH or EXODUS released.... but I don't hear anyone crying over these instances.

Give me a break! And mind you, I write this as a former United States Marine, not some bleeding heart liberal.

Also, PEOPLE ARE DOING CRAZY nonsense like this:

http://www.nbcwashington.com/news/local/Arrest-Made-in-Connection-with-Bottle-Bomb-Explosion-at-Theater-261436231.html

And THE DARK KNIGHT RISES shootings were only two years ago. Between the negative publicity of the very public Sony hack, is it any wonder why the studio wants to avoid any more negative press?

Also everyone who really cares about this is in my opinion full of shit. Last week everyone on the internet was saying "Sony, Rogan and Franco have just masterminded this market gimmick to get everyone to see the movie with the banner "THE MOVIE NORTH KOREA DOESN'T WANT YOU TO SEE"

At first, I sort of bemusedly thought that the Anti-Rogenistas have really gone too far.
Who knows, the hackers could be mercenaries that hack for the highest bidder. Many suspect an inside job. Investigators are implying that NK is involved due to similarities in the malware, etc., that have previously been used.
While no particular actions (bombings, shootings, etc.) yet have been specified as far as we know, the wording of one threat - “Remember the 11th of September 2001. We recommend you to keep yourself distant from the places at that time. (If your house is nearby, you’d better leave.)” certainly could be construed to insinuate such. Perhaps more specific threats were made that were backed up with data to prove they could do what they’ve threatened and it hasn’t been publicized yet.
The fact that this hack has gone very deep, likely more deeply than we know, only underlines the point that some folks have been making for years now about cyber warfare and how lax most internet security truly is.
Gone pointed that out quite clearly in the thread about the email hack.
One might not necessarily have to kill and maim to wage war and create casualties. Ruining the financial structure, power grids, etc., could bring a nation to its knees just as assuredly.
While I don't yet think this hack rises to that level, it certainly has been financially and publicity devastating to Sony.

I'm gonna have to kind of agree here. Free expression and all, how in the hell did a movie ( although a comedy) about assassinating am actual, living, world leader, one widely seen as a disturbed dictator, even get the green light? Did no one anticipate some trouble down the road?

And to be glib but honest, anything keeping Seth Rogen out of theaters is a good thing.

I agree, a one note guy at best, scruffy beard - big glasses, see I am funny!
Ditto on James Franco

Aside from that - Sony never should have backed down, a major blunder, and they are going to lose a lot of talent because of this whole thing.
